Total productive maintenance (TPM) is one of the foundation blocks of any lean manufacturing implementation; after all it is not possible to improve our processes if we cannot rely on our equipment and machines. Total Productive Maintenance Synonym(s): TPM A set of techniques, originally pioneered by Denso in the Toyota Group in Japan, to ensure that every machine in a production process always is able to perform its required tasks. Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) was developed by Seiichi Nakajima in Japan between 1950 and 1970. The outcome of his work was the application of the TPM process in 1971.
