According to Lawrence Barrett, the plans were formed by Mrs. Forrest and approved by her husband.  The first of three Mercer buildings in Doylestown, Fonthill served as a showplace for Mercer’s famed Moravian tiles. Designed by Mercer, the building is an eclectic mix of Medieval, Gothic, and Byzantine architectural styles. Fonthill Castle was built in the early 1900s as a grand residence for a foremost archaeologist and antiquarian of the time. Renaissance man Henry Chapman Mercer was a person of many talents and pursuits. As a scholar, his life was filled with discoveries and collections, many of which needed a permanent home before this castle’s construction.
